Beyond The Duplex Planet (SXSW)

4.6

Beyond The Duplex Planet is a feature documentary about artist David Greenberger and his groundbreaking work with senior citizens. In 1979, Greenberger took a job as activities director at a Boston nursing home and began conducting unconventional interviews with residents—asking unexpected questions like "Which do you prefer - coffee or meat?" and "What is embarrassment?" These conversations became The Duplex Planet, an influential early zine known for its humor, warmth, and sincerity.

The documentary explores how Greenberger's artistic practice intersects with aging and community, while also examining the life of an artist devoted to documenting the elderly who is now entering his own senior years. Directed by Beth Harrington, the film features appearances by notable figures including Penn Jillette, Ed Ruscha, and Michael Stipe.

This is an official festival event screening at the 2026 South by Southwest Film & TV Festival (March 12-18) in Austin, Texas.
