Troy Campbell (SXSW)

4.6

Troy Campbell is an acclaimed singer-songwriter and co-founder of the influential alt-country band Loose Diamonds, performing his distinctive blend of folk, alt-country, and rock music.

  • Campbell got his start in the Dayton, Ohio punk rock scene in the late 1980s before moving to Austin, Texas to pursue music full-time. His pivotal encounter with Texas music legend Alejandro Escovedo led to the formation of his first band, The Highwaymen, which eventually evolved into Loose Diamonds.
  • His powerful, distinctive voice—described by Bruce Springsteen as having a "high lonesome, wide-open sound"—is complemented by his keening falsetto and emotionally direct songwriting that explores themes of desolation and hope-filled abandonment.
  • Beyond performing, Campbell is the founder of The House of Songs, a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting musicians from around the world through collaboration and shared performances. He's also worked as a filmmaker, animation producer, and created the PBS series "City of Songs," which explores the musical identities of cities worldwide.
  • His landmark album "American Breakdown" was originally released in 2001 and has been reissued on vinyl. The deeply personal record, produced by Gurf Morlix, captures Campbell at a peak of lyrical clarity with roots music that blends folk, alt-country, and late-night rock.
