Community Engagement for Artists: Building Roots, Not Just Reach
Discover how to grow your artistic career by building roots in your community, not just chasing online reach. Community Engagement for Artists: Building Roots, Not Just Reach is an interactive workshop that helps creatives craft deeper, more loyal audience relationships through intentional, place-based connection.
Instead of burning out on constant posting and promotion, you’ll explore how to create genuine cultural value through story, reciprocity, and thoughtful relationship-building in the neighborhoods and communities you care about. This session is tailored for working creatives who want their audiences, collaborators, and supporters to feel like a real community, not just a follower count.
- Learn practical strategies for connecting with audiences offline through shared stories, lived experience, and neighborhood-based engagement.
- Discover ways to grow students, donors, buyers, and collaborators through trust and mutual support rather than nonstop self-promotion.
- Explore how to design events, classes, and projects that feel welcoming, accessible, and rooted in community needs.
- Clarify how your unique artistic voice can serve your local cultural ecosystem and create long-term, values-aligned relationships.
This workshop is open to arts professionals of any medium, including performers, visual artists, filmmakers, designers, teaching artists, literary artists, culture organizers, and nonprofit creatives. Whether you are trying to fill seats, grow a client base, nurture donors, or simply find your artistic community, you will leave with concrete, sustainable approaches to engagement that feel human, not transactional.
The session is led by choreographer and Dance Waterloo founder Morgan Teel, whose work centers on expanding access to contemporary dance through community-rooted performances in public spaces and cultural venues. Drawing from her experience in nonprofit leadership, corporate community engagement, and coaching creatives on time management and energy protection, Morgan offers a grounded, real-world perspective on how to build an arts practice that supports both you and your community for the long haul.
Come ready to reflect, share, and rethink what audience-building can look like when you put relationships and place at the center of your artistic practice.
Accessibility and language access support are available by request to ensure all community members can participate fully.
