African American Community Conversation
Step into a powerful evening of connection, conversation, and community care at the African American Community Conversation, a free gathering centered on Black voices and experiences around substance use in Travis County.
This is not a lecture or a panel – it’s a facilitated, private conversation created by and for African Americans to speak openly about what substance use looks and feels like in real life, and what true support should be in our neighborhoods.
- Bring your story – whether you’ve been directly impacted, supported a loved one, or simply care about the future of your community, your lived experience is the expertise in the room.
- Shape the future of services – share what’s working, what’s missing, and what substance use services and supports should look like for African Americans in Travis County, from prevention and harm reduction to treatment and long-term recovery.
- Enjoy free food – come hungry for both conversation and a good meal, with complimentary food provided as part of this community-centered space.
- Feel heard and respected – trained facilitators will guide the discussion to ensure it is respectful, affirming, and focused on healing, solutions, and community wisdom.
- Help change systems – what is shared in this room will help inform how future substance use supports are designed and delivered in Travis County, so people are met with dignity, understanding, and culturally resonant care.
If you’ve ever looked at how substance use is handled and thought, “This could be different,” this is your chance to say how. Show up, speak up, and be part of a conversation that can ripple out into real change for African Americans seeking or needing support in Travis County.
