WELDON HENSON, Brian Winfeld
Details
Kick off your Tuesday night with a classic Austin combo: cold drinks, hearty eats, and real-deal country tunes at the legendary Broken Spoke.
- Early show with Brian Winfeld (6:00–8:00 pm) – Ease into the evening in the restaurant with live music while you tuck into dinner. Brian Winfeld sets the mood with an intimate set that feels like your own private Texas soundtrack. It’s laid-back, tip-your-musician kind of vibing, perfect for catching up with friends before the dancehall really wakes up.
- Dancehall with Weldon Henson (starting at 8:15 pm) – Once the plates are cleared, the night shifts gears. Weldon Henson brings honky-tonk energy to the dancehall, keeping the spirit of traditional country alive with twangy guitars, two-step–ready rhythms, and songs that practically drag you out of your chair and onto the floor.
- Two-Steppin’ Tuesdays tradition – This weekly residency has become a local ritual. Expect locals who know their way around the dance floor, visitors ready to learn on the fly, and an atmosphere that feels like a time capsule of old-school Texas dancehalls.
- All about the experience – From the neon, to the sawdust-on-the-floor energy, to the live band just feet away, it’s an up-close, no-frills, all-fun kind of night. Whether you’re here for the music, the dancing, or just to people-watch with a drink in hand, you’ll leave with a story.
Show up hungry for dinner, stay for the twang, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself two-stepping late into the night. WELDON HENSON in the dancehall and Brian Winfeld in the restaurant make May 19th a full-evening soundtrack of pure Texas country.
Venue Details
Step back in time at the Broken Spoke, the last true Texas dance hall that's been keeping Austin's country music tradition alive since 1964! Founded by James White (who named it after his love for wagon wheels and the James Stewart movie "Broken Arrow"), this iconic venue has transformed from a humble café to a world-famous honky-tonk that's hosted countless legends.
The Broken Spoke isn't just any dance hall - it's a living piece of Texas history where cowpokes and city slickers come together under one roof. With its classic honky-tonk decor featuring red-checkered tablecloths, low ceilings, neon lights, and even an old saddle on the wall, you'll feel the authentic Texas spirit the moment you walk in.
- Enjoy live country music performances in both the restaurant area and the main dancehall
- Take free dance lessons with Terri White (but remember - no line dancing allowed at this traditional venue!)
- Explore the museum section filled with memorabilia from country music royalty
- Savor Texas cooking including chicken fried steak and other hearty fare
Over the decades, the Broken Spoke has welcomed everyone from Bob Wills and Ernest Tubb to Willie Nelson (who still pops in occasionally to play without charging a dime). Even as modern development surrounds it, this defiant symbol of Texas culture stands proudly unchanged - because as owner James White would tell you, "You can't build a legend overnight," and the Broken Spoke is the Real Deal.
