Flyjack's Funk and Soul Revival
Details
Flyjack’s Funk and Soul Revival is the kind of show that makes you wish bell-bottoms never went out of style. On May 23rd, the band turns South Congress into a time machine straight back to the late 60s and 70s, when grooves were deep, horns were hot, and the dance floor was the only place that mattered.
Billed as “The Mutha’ of 60’s–70’s Rare Groove, Soul and Funk,” this night is all about high-octane rhythm. Expect a sweaty, old-school dance party powered by heavy bass lines, gritty guitar, and a horn section that hits like a freight train. It’s DYNAMITE soul and SUPERBAD funk, running hotter than a ’72 Eldorado on high octane.
Time & Cover: Music kicks off at 7:30pm with a $10 cash cover and doors opening at 7pm, giving you just enough time to grab a drink and stake out your spot near the stage.
Vibe: Wall-to-wall rare grooves, deep-cut soul, and funk classics with a modern edge. Think sweaty club in 1973 meets Austin cool in 2026.
Age: This one is 21+ only, so expect a full-grown, ready-to-dance crowd.
Flyjack is led by founding members Buck McKinney (guitar/vox) and Brad Bradburn (bass/vox), veterans of the groundbreaking Austin alternative-jazz group Gnappy, which released three acclaimed albums in the early 2000s and even landed in the book “Jambands” by Dean Budnick. That history shows—these players know how to stretch out a groove and keep a room locked in.
The band’s current lineup is a full-on funk machine:
Buck McKinney – guitar / vocals
Brad Bradburn – bass / vocals
David Hunter Thacker – keyboards
Jose Guitierrez – drums / vocals
John Voss – percussion
Paulo Santos – sax
Mike Shields – trumpet
Wyatt Corder – trumpet
Will Wright – trombone
With that many horns and that much rhythm onstage, the set list turns into a cinematic, nonstop groove session—deep-pocket beats, fat organ swells, and horn lines that practically dare you to stay in your seat. If you’re into rare funk 45s, vintage soul, or modern funk revival bands, you’ll feel right at home.
Come ready to dance, sweat, and shout along. Flyjack’s Funk and Soul Revival isn’t just a gig—it’s a full-body funk experience, tailor-made for people who believe the best nights end with tired feet and a big grin.
