Happy Hour w/Geoff Queen & Josh Hoag

4.7

Details

Ease into your evening at Happy Hour with Geoff Queen & Josh Hoag, a laid-back musical hang tucked away at one of South Austin’s most legendary hideouts.

“Discovered” the way some folks say America was—by accident, while lost—this cozy honky-tonk is camouflaged by a wooded neighborhood beyond Slaughter and Manchaca, where the road in looks suspiciously like the road out. That’s part of the magic: you don’t just stumble into this place, you arrive there like you’ve crossed an invisible border into Old Austin.

Once you make it in, you’re rewarded with a warm, unpretentious bar, a locals-first crowd, and a stage that’s become the South Pole of Austin’s musical axis. Lately, this once “least visible” venue has turned into a full-on happening scene—without ever losing its scruffy, working-class charm.

  • Kick off your night with happy hour drinks and easygoing conversation
  • Settle into twangy, rootsy tunes from Geoff Queen & Josh Hoag—perfect soundtrack for sunset beers
  • Soak up that old-school Austin atmosphere: no gimmicks, no contrived concept, just good music and good people
  • Hang on the sprawling property that’s been lovingly shaped into a homey event space over the last few years

If you like your happy hour with a side of authentic Austin history, a dash of mystery, and a whole lot of live music charm, this is your spot on May 26th at 6:00 pm. Come early, stay late, and don’t be surprised if you feel like you’ve stepped into a secret chapter of the city’s music story.

Venue Details

Welcome to Sam's Town Point - a hidden gem in South Austin that feels like stepping back in time! This beloved dive bar has been a working-class neighborhood joint since 1981, run by Penny Grossman and her family, and has emerged as one of Austin's most authentic music venues.

Nestled among trees in a quiet neighborhood, Sam's Town Point exudes old Austin charm with its unassuming beige exterior. Inside, you'll discover a cozy space adorned with aging beer signs, wood paneling, and a delightful mix of comfy couches and old movie theater-style seats facing the dance floor and bandstand. Christmas lights and Chinese lanterns add to the homey atmosphere, while a late-1960s Wurlitzer jukebox loaded with 45-rpm records stands against one wall like a forgotten treasure.

  1. Enjoy live music seven nights a week featuring top local and touring talent
  2. Try Texas draft beers from breweries like Jester King, Karbach, and Live Oak
  3. Join the popular two-step dance lessons held weekly
  4. Experience both indoor entertainment (capacity ~80) and outdoor events (several hundred)
  5. Bring your friendly pup - they're dog-friendly!

What makes Sam's truly special isn't just the pool table, DJ booth, or even the taxidermied black bear near the front - it's the community of artists and music lovers who gather here. Under the curation of songwriter Ramsay Midwood, you can always count on quality performances, whether inside or on the spacious outdoor stage.
