Sightsee Mount Bonnell
Mount Bonnell stands as one of Austin's most cherished landmarks, offering visitors a breathtaking escape from the urban landscape. At approximately 775-781 feet above sea level, this magnificent limestone height is considered one of the highest points within Austin city limits, providing panoramic views that have captivated visitors since the mid-19th century.
The journey to the summit involves climbing roughly 106 limestone steps, a short hike that rewards adventurers with spectacular vistas of Lake Austin, the surrounding Hill Country, and Austin's ever-changing skyline. From this vantage point, you can see the iconic Pennybacker Bridge, the Colorado River winding through the landscape, and luxury homes nestled into the hillsides.
Historically significant, Mount Bonnell was named after George W. Bonnell, who served as Commissioner of Indian Affairs for the Republic of Texas. The area is believed to have once been located on an Indian trail and may have served as a defense point for the city in the early 1800s. In 1939, the Covert family donated the land to the city, and it was officially designated as Covert Park. The site is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark.
