barDescription
Deep Eddy Cabaret stands as Austin's favorite neighborhood bar since 1951, offering a genuine slice of old Austin charm. Originally founded by Raymond and Mickey Hickman as Deep Eddy Cafe, the name was changed to "Cabaret" when Raymond exclaimed, "We don't sell any food!" Mickey longed for a charming and entertaining establishment where patrons would know each other and the bartenders.
The bar gets its name from a deep swimming hole that once existed on the Colorado River just behind the establishment. The building itself has a rich history, originally opening around 1915 as a neighborhood grocery store and bait shop built by the Johnson family, who were the first landowners in the Deep Eddy region.
Inside this classic dive bar, visitors will find:
- A vintage jukebox offering an amazingly affordable five songs for a dollar
- Two pool tables in the back
- Frosted 32-ounce mugs of cold beer
- A cozy, dark atmosphere with string lights and track lighting
- Round tables and swiveling diner-style stools
The exterior features a striped awning over a black painted wall with separate signs reading "Deep," "Eddy," and "Cabaret," with musical notes replacing some letters. A simple red neon sign proclaiming "Beer" hangs from the building.
Open every day from noon until 2am, Deep Eddy Cabaret serves beer, liquor, wine, and snacks.
