The Venue
Donn's Depot is an iconic Austin watering hole established in 1978, housed in a truly unique venue - a converted Missouri-Pacific train depot relocated from McNeil, Texas, with additional railroad cars incorporated into the structure. Located at 1600 W 5th Street in Austin, this beloved institution offers live music, cocktails, dancing, and a welcoming family atmosphere that has made it a staple of Austin's nightlife for over four decades.
The venue's fascinating history began when original owner Bob Ogden purchased and transported an entire rail depot to what was then the outskirts of Austin. Musician Donn Adelman was commissioned to provide entertainment, and in 1978, he purchased the bar and renamed it Donn's Depot. The family ownership tradition continues today with his wife Arleen and son Matt.
Inside, Donn's Depot is a sprawling wonderland of interconnected spaces carved from rail cars and high ceilings. The main room features a stage with a grand piano, surrounded by a dance floor and numerous seating areas. One of the converted rail cars serves as the women's restroom, complete with a stripper pole and graffiti that adds to the venue's quirky charm.
Live music remains the heart of Donn's Depot, with performances nearly every night featuring local artists. The musical style varies but has earned the venue a reputation as an Austin honky-tonk hub.
